An effort by a bipartisan group of U.S. Senate and House of Representatives is urging the Department of Veteran Affairs to permit VA physicians to recommend medical cannabis to veterans. The group sent a letter to Veterans Affairs Secretary, Robert McDonald, to approve the measure in accordance with state laws.
The letter is led by Congressional members Kirsten Gillibrand, Steve Daines, and Jeff Merkley of the senate. With Earl Blumenauer, Dina TItus and Dana Rohrabacher of the House of Representatives. The letter is directly aimed to the issue that forbids VA physicians from writing recommendations of medical marijuana to veterans, even in states where it is already legal.
In the letter, the bipartisan group stated that the current VA policy interferes with the doctor and patient from being truthful with each other. It was also mentioned that it is not in the veteran’s best interest for the VA to dip its hands into doctor-patient relationships.
This group of lawmakers has been getting a bit of commendation from the marijuana community for stepping up for the nation’s veterans. Robert Capecchi of the Marijuana Policy Project, Director of Federal Policies, hopes that the Veterans Affairs find it in their hearts to compassionately see the cause of this measure and follow the recommendation.
