Medical Marijuana History in Minnesota
The Medical Cannabis Program is embodied under S.F. 2470, which was signed into law on May 29, 2014, by the State Governor after it has been approved by both Senate and the House. The statute was made effective May 30, 2014. The program is administered by the Minnesota Department of Health (DOH), which, mandated under the law, established the Patient Registry Program so that qualifying patients, designated caregivers, and physicians can enroll in the program.
The law provides that the patients who have been diagnosed with any of the qualifying conditions specified under the law may apply in the program registry to use cannabis for medical purposes. In addition to qualifying conditions already included in the statute, the Department will consider intractable pain and other conditions in the coverage of the medical cannabis act not later than July 01, 2016.
